MSHS PPG Catalina Express Crowther

MSHS Pacific Power Group is proud to support the newest Catalina Express ferry with a complete propulsion and power generation solution built around advanced Rolls-Royce mtu Series 4000 engines. This 49-meter, 500-passenger catamaran represents a major leap forward in performance, reliability, and environmental responsibility for California’s ferry operations.

As highlighted inFoghorn Magazine, the Catalina Express project showcases how collaboration and innovation can deliver the next generation of clean, efficient marine propulsion.

Our Role and Solution

For this project, MSHS PPG engineered and supplied the entire propulsion and power generation system, a turnkey solution designed to maximize performance, efficiency, and compliance. We partnered with our trusted OEM and industry collaborators to deliver a fully integrated package that meets demanding operational and emissions requirements.

The system includes:

  • Four Rolls-Royce mtu Series 4000 engines providing a combined output of 10,288 horsepower, capable of propelling the vessel at 37 knots.
  • Marine transmissions from Reintjes, supplied through Karl Senner.
  • Shafting systems from Geislinger / Driveline Service of Portland.
  • Custom MSHS PPG-designed generator sets, built by MER.
  • Full Tier 4 aftertreatment, including diesel particulate filters and a comprehensive monitoring system.

Our team integrated every component to operate seamlessly together, combining the best available equipment with our proprietary design and control logic. We also worked closely with the customer to demonstrate why this configuration offered the best balance of reliability, efficiency, and long-term value, and successfully earned their trust to deliver it.

Why It Matters

This high-profile build is rare in the U.S., and MSHS PPG is proud to be at the helm. Serving as the single-source integrator for both propulsion and power generation reinforces our standing as a trusted expert in delivering complete marine power solutions.

From engine selection and emissions compliance to installation, commissioning, and lifecycle support, MSHS PPG provided a comprehensive package that reflects our deep technical expertise and commitment to our customers’ success.

We’re excited to see this new ferry in action and proud to contribute to a project that sets a benchmark for performance and sustainability in the maritime industry.
